Subject: Baked Cheese Sandwiches
Dear Uncle Phaedrus,
My name is Laura from Longmont, Colorado.
St. Vrain Valley School District is where I went to elementary school. When I was a little girl in 4th grade, my favorite school lunch was the Baked Cheese Sandwich.
I’ve heard they made their bread from scratch, and I’m not sure what cheese they used, but it was fantastic! No grilled cheese could ever match it!!
Would it be possible for you to be able to find this recipe? I’ve called the district and left a couple messages, but have not heard back from them.
It may be a top secret recipe?
Thank you for your help with this!
Best Wishes!
Laura
Hi Laura,
I could not find any baked cheese sandwich recipes from the St. Vrain Valley School District in Longmont, Colorado.
The reason may be that they don’t serve them anymore. That may be why you have not gotten a response from them.
I can find “baked cheese sandwich” listed on St. Vrain Elementary School menus from 2007 and before, but the most recent menus, from 2011,
do not have it – they have “grilled cheese sandwiches” instead.

There are other baked cheese sandwiches recipe available. See here for one:

Subject: Maas Brothers Department Store, 7 Layer Chocolate layer cake recipe
Dear Phaedrus,
As a child in Florida, my mother would take me to a large Florida chain department store named, Maas Brother's located in Tampa.
After a long day of shopping we would go upstairs to a nice dining area, that also had a bakery. I am trying to find the recipe
of this now defunct chain store, for a 7 layer yellow cake with chocolate icing. I was always in the shape of a meat loaf pan.
It had chopped pecans and one cherry on the top. I was a simple recipe I am sure but the frosting was firm enough to stay on the
top and also on all side's of the cake.....It also became my favorite birthday treat as I got older.
Now, I am getting ready to turn 51, the store is gone and so is my Mom. I am trying to find this recipe so I can make it for
myself for my birthday in Nov. If you could track this one down it really would be greatly appreciated. So in advance, THANK YOU, very much.
Happy Hunting and much success.
Stephanie
Hi Stephanie,
Sorry, I had no success with this cake recipe. There is a Maas Brothers’ Facebook page here:
Maas Brothers on Facebook
Perhaps if you post a request there, someone can help.

Subject: I FOUND A RECIPE FOR MAAS BROTHERS WEDDING CAKE PEOPLE ARE ASKING FOR
Hello Phaedrus
I have never done this before, sent in anything by email, but I read your instructions and here is my real name = BG = aka GiGi and
I created this e-mail address to send the comment to you; but you said you will not give it out anyway or my last name = so that is good.
The following comments you can add it you like =
I also loved going to Maas Brothers in Tampa when we were young, with my sister and our Mother. I am not 61 years old and also look for
recipes from the stores like this one that closed down.
Real recipes from scratch, not like now-a-days where most restaurants get everything pre-mixed in bags and just dump it in a pan and
bake it or the food item comes already made and frozen and they just thaw it out and serve it.
I found this recipe and do not know how to give proper credit so I wrote down everything and hope you can sort it out for me. Thank you.
Subject: Maas Brothers Department Store = Wedding Cake RecipeI found this recipe at =Heraldtribune.com A column by Linda Brandt = Sarasota, Florida
Maas Brothers' Confetti Cream Cake
The recipe is given there in case you want to add it to your website = Hope I did this ok.
Thanks again, GiGi
Hi GiGi,
Thanks for sending this. I’ll certainly post it or a link to it properly on my site. There’s no need to create new names and new e-mails to write to me –
I never post e-mail addresses or full names, just first names or intials.
GiGi, I’m not convinced that this Maas Brothers recipe is the one that Stephanie wanted because:
1)She didn’t say anything about a cream cheese, date & nut filling between each layer like this cake has.
2)She says 7 layers – this only has two split layers for 4 total.
3) She says a single cherry on top – this has chopped cherries.
4) She says chocolate frosting – this says the top has the filling for frosting, and “frost the sides with additional whipped cream”.
It doesn’t appear to match her description at all.

Subject: Chocolate Cake for Williams-Sonoma Celebration Cake Pan
Ten years or so ago I purchased a Celebration Cake Pan from Williams-Sonoma. The pan came with a Williams-Sonoma chocolate cake recipe.
It was divine and used brown sugar instead of white. I have checked with Williams-Sonoma several times with no luck. I have also
looked online with no luck. I'd love to recover the recipe.
Thanks,
Kathie
Hello Kathie,
Sorry, I had no success finding a chocolate cake recipe that came with a Williams-Sonoma Celebration Cake pan.
Have you gone through all of the cake recipes on the Williams-Sonoma website? See:
Williams-Sonoma
The only other suggestion that I have is that it might be in this cookbook:
"Williams-Sonoma Collection: Cake" by Fran Gage
You can probably find a used copy at a reasonable price. Try Amazon.com
