Subject: Looking for chili recipe from Big Top Shoppe
Dear Phaedrus,
I am looking for a chili recipe that was used on hot dogs, hamburgers
and cheeseburgers at Big Top Shoppe on 701 State Street East in Westport, CT.
They are out of business but were open in the 60’s and 70’s, maybe 80’s,
not sure. The chili cheeseburgers were the best I have ever had. If you
have any info on where I may find the recipe, your help would be greatly
appreciated.
Thank you,
Bob
Hi Bob,
I had no success with this recipe. I found a couple of raves on message boards about how good Big Top Shoppes' burgers were and one long blog post lamenting the loss of their chili and other delicacies, but no one appears to have had any luck
locating a recipe. The only other thing that I found was a corporate registration notice.
It appears that the company was founded in 1961 and was dissolved in 1977.
I’ll post this on the site.
Phaed
Remarks:
There must be descendants of the owners and also former employees out there. It would be a good thing if one of those descendants or former employees
had the chili sauce recipe and would send it to me. Sad if it is lost forever.

Subject: Crestwood bakery cut out holiday sugar cookie recipe
I was raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. We had a fabulous bakery,
Crestwood bakery, that had several locations. We went to the
Glendale one. Every holiday they featured brightly colored, cut
out cookies. Very large, about 3" or 4". Iced green Christmas
trees, pink hearts, yellow Easter bunnies, green Shamrocks.
The icing was hard. The bakery changed hands & names to Sentry.
I have called, written & begged them for their recipe & they
won't give it up. Ive been Googling for years looking for a
past baker who has it or anyone else. No luck. Nothing comes
close in the recipes Ive found. Not sure if they're butter or
sugar cookie cut outs but they were delicious! Any help you
have would be great!
Hello Julie,
Sorry, no success with this. I can’t find any recipes from either Crestwood Bakery or Sentry Bakery in Milwaukee.
I’ll post this on the site.

Dear Phaed,
I ran across the following request about Crestwood Bakery Cookies in
Milwaukee from “Julie” on May 09, 2015. _
__
I also grew up in the Milwaukee area and love the
same cookies. If you still have contact
information for “Julie”, please let her know that
the seasonal cutout cookies with the hard frosting
were actually baked by Melody Cookies in Oak
Creek, WI for Crestwood Bakeries at Sentry stores.
I believe that the cookies are still available at
the Melody Cookie outlet store. The cutout,
frosted sugar cookies are really awesome! I have
enclosed the Melody Cookies contact information
and hope that you can share it with Julie. If she
has any questions, please feel free to forward her
my email address to her.
I hope that this helps, Sue
PS - I used to do cake decorating and I believe
that the hard icing is called "Royal Icing".

Baked Stuffed Onions
6 large mild onions
3/4 cup soft bread crumbs
3/4 cup finely chopped chicken or mushrooms
3/4 cup white sauce(see below)
1 egg yolk
1/2 cup buttered cracker crumbs
Salt and Pepper
Remove skins of onions and boil in salted water, uncovered,
for 10 minutes. Drain and turn upside down to cool.
Remove centers of onions, leaving a shell thick enough to
retain its shape. Chop onion centers that were removed and
combine with all other ingredients except buttered cracker
crumbs. Stuff onion shells with mixture, sprinkle with
cracker crumbs, and bake in a 350°F oven 40 minutes until
onions are tender. 6 servings.
