Subject: Shrimp & Grits
I avoid chain restaurants but on a recent trek to New Orleans I was drug into Bubba Gump’s Shrimp Restaurant.
I was absolutely knocked out by there version of Shrimp & Grits. It had a spicy, orange colored sauce on top
of the cheese grits. I almost licked the plate clean. Can you help me find this recipe. I have tried every
source that I can think of.
Rosemarie
Hello Rosemarie,
Sorry, I had no success finding a recipe for this popular dish.
Their New Orleans menu is here: Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.
The menu describes the dish like this:
Shrimp & Grits
A whole mess o’ Shrimp, Ham, Onions, Andouille Sausage, Garlic and Cajun Spices served over Carolina Grits.
I found a lot of raves about the dish, and a few people offered recipes for shrimp & grits in response to requests
for it. However, none of them were really even copycats. I’m sure they are good, but they didn’t contain all of the
ingredients listed on the menu. There may be recipes on the web with the ingredients listed, but I found none that
claimed similarity to Bubba Gump’s.
I’ll post this in case a reader can help.
On a side note, I found lots of Bubba Gump Recipes here, but not Shrimp & Grits: Bubba Gump Recipes
Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. published a shrimp cookbook, which you can find on Amazon. However, word is that the
shrimp & grits recipe isn't in it.

Subject: Tartar Sauce Recipe
You would have thought I had hit the jackpot when I found this recipe on your site today, Wyatt's Cafeteria German Chocolate Pie.
I always tried to get it when they were open and had given up when they closed…. Now today I have a request for another recipe
I hope you can find…. I never liked tartar sauce until I taste this one at Thelma’s Bar B Que in Houston, TX.. In the last year
or so the place has closed and I have just had a craving for it every time I have fish… Thelma’s was located on the corner of
Scott and Southmore in Houston, TX 77004… This is the first attempt I have made in finding this recipe so if I find it before
you I would be glad to share… I appreciate what you do….
Sincerely
Chandra
Hello Chandra,
I found a few mentions of Thelma’s and her tartar sauce, but I did not find any recipes, copycats, or even “tastes-likes”. Sorry.
I’ll post this on the site, maybe a reader can help.

Subject: Ice cream recipe
Hi there....
I am looking for a "Honeymoon Ice-cream" recipe for my 88 year old mom
from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Can you help?
Thank you!
Hello Dabney,
Dabney, you must give details whenever possible. Was this a commercial ice
cream or a homemade ice cream? What were some of the ingredients that she
recalls?
The only homemade Honeymoon Ice Cream recipe that I could find is below. I
hope that's it.
Various ice cream companies have sold their own "honeymoon ice cream" flavor
over the years. There is even a "Honeymoon Ice Cream Company" in California.
There is an ad here for the Royal Candy Company from the Pella, Iowa
Chronicle for July 12, 1923 that says they serve "honeymoon ice cream":
Pella Chronicle 1923
If what you want is a home recipe for a commercial ice cream that was sold
in ice cream shops and stores in Iowa decades ago, then I'm afraid that I
can't offer you much hope of finding it.

Honeymoon Ice Cream Recipe
Ingredients:
4 oz Unsweetened chocolate
1 cup Milk
2 lg Eggs
1 cup Sugar
1 cup Heavy or whipping cream
1 tsp Vanilla
1 pinch Salt
1 Tsp ground cinnamon
Method:
Melt the unsweetened chocolate in the top of a double boiler over hot, not
boiling water.
Gradually whisk in the milk and heat, stirring constantly, until smooth.
Remove from the heat and let cool.
Whisk the eggs in a mixing bowl until light and fluffy, 1-2 minutes.
Whisk in the sugar, a little at a time, then continue whisking until
completely blended, about 1 minute more.
Add the cream, vanilla and salt and whisk to blend.
Add cinnamon, whisk in. Pour the chocolate mixture into the cream mixture
and blend.
Cover and refrigerate until cold, about 1-3 hours, depending on your
refrigerator.
Transfer the mixture to an ice cream maker and freeze following the
manufacturer's instructions. Makes 1 generous quart.

Thanks for you help!
Hi Dabney,
Sorry, the recipe that I sent you was the only one that I could find. Was
the one she remembers a commercial ice cream or a homemade ice cream? No way
I can proceed without some leads.
