Subject: Recipe from Family Circle or Woman's Day

Either came from the recipe cards found in the magazine
Family Circle or Women's Day sometime between 1965 and 1978.
The fruit cake had a dark batter and it called for grape juice,
  I believe 1/4 cup.

This is the best fruit cake I have ever eaten and have searched
all my cookbooks for the recipe, have tried similar ones but they
  just are not the same.

Thank you very much for your help. Susan

  Dear Phaedrus,
I made the mistake of loaning out my 20 yr. old Bisquick cookbook
and never have been able to retrieve it. My favorite recipe was
for the original cheeseburger pie before Bisquick came out with
the "Impossible" cheeseburger pie. I remember the ingredients
being ground beef and onion browned, cottage cheese and egg(s)
mixed with worcestershire sauce, a layer of sliced tomatoes topped
with cheese all in a Bisquick pie crust. do you think you could
find that original recipe for me?
  Forever grateful,
  Sue

Hi Sandra,

Below is a good marzipan recipe. Note that authentic marzipan contains raw egg whites, which may carry salmonella. If you can purchase pasteurized egg whites, you should use those. I am also sending two marzipan recipes that do not contain egg whites. They aren't truly authentic, but they are safer. The one with marshmallow cream seems particularly good.

If you're going to make marzipan pigs, you should add food coloring to white marzipan so that they will be pink. Also, sometimes the feet of the pigs are dipped in melted chocolate to represent "shoes". There are instructions for making simple marzipan pigs here: Ehow. These instructions use molds.

Carpet & Dog Woes

Hi Delbert,

I went to a lot of websites and read lots of suggestions. Maybe I can boil them down to just a few for you.

1) Be sure the carpet is kept as clean as possible. Residual odors of some kind can attract a dog to scratch or chew a spot. A spill can sometimes soak through to the carpet pad beneath, and even though you've cleaned the carpet, your dog can still smell the spill.

2) If your dog keeps returning to the same place on the carpet to scratch & chew, you might put a little oil of cloves on that spot. Test it first to make sure it won't stain your carpet.

3) Another thing you might try if your dog returns to the same spot to scratch & chew is bitter apple spray. Veterinarians and pet shops sell this and other products that are supposed to make dogs avoid a certain place. Always try these beforehand on a place that doesn't show so you can be sure they won't stain your carpet.
