Subject: seeking recipe for fried chicken from Mandas the Chicken KIng
Many years closed, Mandas the Chicken King was a Chicago bar and restaurant that served heavenly batter fried chicken.
Light, crunchy, non-greasy . They were located near Montrose and Central. I have tried, unsuccessfully, to find a similar
recipe. After the restaurant closed, a Persian restaurant called Pars Cove opened in the Mandas space. For a short time,
they offered the same fried chicken as a concession to the Mandas fans. But alas, Pars Cove long ago moved to a different
location in Chicago and long ago stopped serving Mandas fried chicken. Do you think there's any way you could coax the
recipe out of them.?...I once tried but never received any answer to my query.
Nancy
Hi Nancy,
Sorry, I don’t get involved in contacting restaurants to ask for their recipes. I did a search, but the only things that
I found were a few people praising the chicken and looking for the recipe. I’ll post your request on my site.
Someone on a message board said that the batter that H Salt Fish & Chips uses for their chicken strips was similar.
I could not find H Salt’s recipe. Have you tried using any beer batter for fish recipes for your chicken?

Subject: McKenzie's Cinnamon Rolls
Hi Uncle Phaedrus,
If ... you can find the cinnamon rolls recipe served from 1974-1978 at Lovettsville Elementary School in Lovettsville, VA
that one will do nicely….There were lots of wonderful grandmother’s who made all the food from scratch….wonderful….
all the parents would come for lunch on parent/teacher day, it was worth taking the day off of work…..
Regards,
Suzanne
Hello Suzanne,
I did not have any success locating a cinnamon rolls recipe from Lovettsville Elementary School. The only things that I found
were a few mentions on message boards about how good the cinnamon rolls were. It might be that the cinnamon rolls recipe was
a Loudoun County School System recipe rather than just a Lovettsville Elementary recipe. If so, it might be in the Middleburg
Elementary School’s or Arcola Elementary School’s cookbooks. See:
Middleburg
Arcola
I searched for, but could not find, cookbooks from Lovettsville Elementary or the Loudoun County School System.

I'm looking for a cake called recipe called "Grace's Oleo Cake" based on a WWII recipe when butter was rationed.
The version that I'm looking for now uses butter. It is a very simple recipe calling for one of everything,
except for eggs (2)....ie 1 C flour, 1 tsp baking powder, 1 c sugar, 1 stick butter, etc.
Thank you, Patricia
Hello Patricia,
Where have you seen this recipe? Did you have it previously and lost it? If so, where did you get it?
You speak as though it now exists in two versions – one with oleo and one with butter. How do you know this?
What is your source of information about it?

Subject: Re: Grace's Oleo Cake
It was given to me by a friend from New City ,NY, in the mid '70's. Oleo was no longer used in it at that time,
so the modern version would not have oleo. The dough is very thick when poured into a 12" x 12" pan.
The cake was originally supposed to be a summer cake -- topped w/fresh fruit (before baking) so that the fruit would not go bad.
Hello Pat,
Sorry, I cannot find anything called “Grace’s Oleo Cake”, “Grace’s Cake”, “Oleo Cake”, or any cake recipes from WW2 that fit your description.
I’ll post this on my site in case a reader can help.

Oleo Cake from The Milwaukee Journal - Dec 26, 1982
Hi Edward,
Thanks, but I don't think that is the recipe Patricia was looking for. The
amounts are not correct. She says:
"It is a very simple recipe calling for one of everything,
except for eggs (2)....ie 1 C flour, 1 tsp baking powder, 1 c sugar, 1 stick
butter, etc"
However, it's close. I'll post it.

Hi Uncle Phaedrus,
You have had such good luck with some of those McKenzie’s recipes, that I was hoping you could track down
the McKenzie’s Cinnamon Rolls recipe? Coworkers from New Orleans wax poetic about it….
Regards,
Suzanne
Hello Suzanne,
I had no success locating a recipe, but Tastee’s has McKenzie's cinnamon rolls recipe and sells the cinnamon rolls. See:
Tastee's on Facebook
All locations of Tastees have the cinnamon rolls, not just this one.
