Some time ago a couple people were searching for a layer cake from this beloved
department store. I remember it too. My mind recalls the "taste" of it.

This inquiry appeared at http://www.hungrybrowser.com/phaedrus/m0203M14.htm

I'm surprised so few refer to it. Their Maurice Salad recipe is still available
everywhere these days and served at Macy's (at least in the Detroit area).
But no nod to this wonderful cake.

In today's world I think it might be described as a dobos torte. I remember it
being bitter sweet chocolate and inside quite "mouse" like.

I'm just wondering if there are other recipes out there that would be close to it.

Best regards

Linda

Hi Linda,

If you scroll down below that original 2014 request at 02-03-2014 , you will see that I received another request for this cake just three months ago, in August, 2020. At that time I did another thorough search for a recipe or a copycat recipe, or any cake recipe that was described as "tasting-like" the J L Hudson cake. Once again, I did not find anything at all. It's too soon to do yet another search for it, and if any of my readers knew of a "tastes-like" recipe for the cake, I believe they would have sent it to me by now. Keep checking back. Perhaps someday a recipe will appear or someone will recommend a "tastes-like".

You may be correct that it was actually a dobos torte. There are dobos torte and similar recipes, such as "Smith Island Cake," on my site at these locations:

05-30-2014

05-21-2007

03-18-2005

10-23-2003

If you try any of those and it turns out very close to the J L Hudson cake, please let me know.
