There are quite a lot of these recipes, with slight differences. Most of them call for some type of hot sauce, such as Tabasco or Texas Pete. The hot sauce is optional, but it might be needed to balance the sweetness of the applesauce.
I wonder if this recipe was originally on the Lipton's package...? Or maybe on the Mott's applesauce jar...?

J. J.'S Hamburger Patties 5 lbs. ground beef (lean) 1 c. applesauce 1 c. Ritz cracker crumbs 1 env. Lipton Onion Soup Mix Salt and pepper to taste 5 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce 3 tsp. Texas Pete or Tabasco sauce Mix all ingredients together and shape into patties. Use what you need and freeze the rest. ------------------------------------------ Skeen Burgers 1 lb. ground beef 1/3 cup Ritz crackers, crushed 1/3 cup applesauce 1/2 tsp. Tabasco sauce (optional) 1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce 1/2 env. dry onion soup mix (Lipton) Dash garlic powder Mix all ingredients and make into patties. Fry or grill.
