Hello Bud,

I cannot find any mention at all of Horn & Hardart's pepper hash.

I'm thinking that you mean the stuff that's not like familiar hash at all, but is more like a relish or a slaw. It's generally known as "Philadelphia pepper relish" due to its popularity there and it's a popular condiment for use on hot dogs there. It's also sometimes served as a side dish, like coleslaw. I have seen it referred to as being of German origin and also as being of Russian origin, although that "Russian" origin might have had a "Volga-German" connection. There may be a "Pennsylvania Dutch" - German connection as well.

While I could not find any mention of H & H's pepper hash, I did find some recipes for pepper hash. They are somewhat similar to each other, and H & H's version may not have been much different from them.

See the recipes on these sites:

The famous Philadelphia pepper hash is a fresh relish, made with cabbage, green pepper and carrots, marinated in vinegar, sugar and salt.

Try some of these recipes. You might find that they are not too dissimilar to what you had at H & H.

thank you!

i mentioned their pepper hash to my little brother (age 79) and his response was the
same as mine — “i would kill for some of that!!”

from our recollection what is missing is whole peppercorns. it did not have any hot
peppers.

the h & h retail store where i bought it was on the corner of easton and moreland roads
in willow grove pa (a suburb of phila), i believe in the 1960s.

anyhow, thanks very much.

best wishes.

peace.
