Phaed

J.L. Hudson's Hungarian Coffee Cake

1 cake compressed yeast
1/4 cup sugar
1 cup milk (scalded)
3-1/2 to 3-3/4 cups sifted flour
1 tsp salt
1/4 cup melted shortening
1 egg, well-beaten

Mix thoroughly yeast and sugar. Scald milk, add salt and shortening.
Cool to lukewarm and add well-beaten eggs and yeast mixture. Add
flour and knead. Allow to rise in greased bowl until double in bulk.
Punch down dough. Allow to rise about 45 minutes. Cut dough into
pieces the size of walnuts and form into balls. Roll each ball in melted
butter, then in mixture of 3/4 cup sugar, 1 tsp cinnamon and 1/2 cup
finely chopped nuts. Place one layer of balls in well-greased deep 9"
tube pan and sprinkle with a few raisins. Add another layer of balls,
sprinkle with more raisins. Cover and let rise until light. Bake at 375° F
for 35 to 40 minutes. To serve, break apart.
