RE: "Fillipi's Pizza Grotto" in San Diego, website: www.cheesepizza.com (which is funny because it's the only place that if you ask for extra cheese on a pizza they don't write the extra right away, instead just looking at you asking "have you ever eaten here before?" (and it's a normal (nice) place, they don't have a "Dick's Last Resort" playful vibe.) So here's the setup: Fillipi's Restaurants in San Diego County do have a very unusual red vinaigrette that they bring out for salad and if you order extra for the torpedo sandwich it comes as well. As far as I know it's the only vinaigrette that they use. The recipe you found already is the same one I found online but in the restaurant it has chunks of what looks like stewed tomatoes in it, it looks like a tomato-based vinaigrette and I've never seen it anywhere else. It's pure sin and unreasonably, UNREASONABLY good. The thought of putting tomato in the recipe is off-putting (as I lean toward traditional/purist oil & vinegar simplicity) but it's the best sub/hoagie/torpedo topping I've ever had. They don't put mayo/mustard, just that. Here's The Proposed Mission Objectives: Can you find a recipe for Fillipi's Pizza Grotto based in San Diego that claims a tomato-based vinaigrette? If not, I'm still pretty satisfied knowing what you already posted for it because you showed that it's red wine vinegar and I hadn't thought to use that which reminded me that the other great sub vinaigrette I had was also red. That other place with the excellent, red, sub vinaigrette is called "Mama's and Papa's Pizza Grotto", located in Vista, California (which is North County, San Diego). The Mamas and Papas Pizza Grotto vinaigrette would also be a massive victory in the quest for EXCELLENCE. Good luck if you choose to go down these paths. -Hope to hear back. -James
