Sure enough, that same book, "How to Feed an Army: Recipes and Lore from the Front Lines" by J.G. Lewin and P.J. Huff, has the Baked Bean Sandwich recipe from the Vietnam era.

Baked Bean Sandwiches for 10 3 cups canned baked beans with pork 1/4 cup chopped fresh celery 1/3 cup chopped onions 1 1/2 tablespoons chopped sweet cucumber pickles 1/4 cup chili sauce 20 slices bread 1/3 cup butter or margarine Drain beans and discard liquid. Mash beans. Combine beans with remaining ingredients; mix throughly. Spread bread with butter or margarine. Spread slices of bread with1/3 cup of filling each; top with second slices of bread.
