fried green tomato sandwich like busy bee cafe in defuniak springs florida?

Hi Andy,

The cafe has been through different owners and appears now to be an Italian restaurant, but they have kept this signature sandwich on the menu. There are articles about the cafe on these sites:

Walton Sun 1

Walton Sun 2

I could not find the sandwich recipe on the web, but I did find it in a cookbook called "Florida's Historic Restaurants and their recipes" by Dawn O'Brien and Becky Roper Matkov. See below.

Phaed

Busy Bee Cafe's Fried Green Tomato Sandwich

1 cup cornmeal, ground fine
1 tablespoon flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
3 medium green tomatoes, sliced
1/2 cup milk
1 tablespoon cooking oil or butter
4 teaspoons or more butter
4 6-inch Po-Boy buns (hoagies)
8 teaspoons mayonnaise
8 slices bacon, fried and drained

In a small, shallow bowl, combine cornmeal, flour, salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
Dip sliced green tomatoes in milk and coat with meal mixture. Spread oil or butter
evenly on grill or in cast-iron skillet and fry green tomatoes until golden brown
on both sides. Spread about 1/2 teaspoon of butter lightly inside each half of each
bun; spread mayonnaise over butter to cover as desired. Place 2 slices of bacon
on the bottom half of each bun. Cover with 4 slices of fried green tomatoes and
top half of each bun. Serves 4.
