The below recipe was given in response to a request for the Helms applesauce cake recipe on a message board, but there is no provenance actually linking it to Helms Bakery.

Applesauce Spice Cake 2 c. flour 1 1/2 c. sugar 1 T. cocoa 1 1/2 tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. cinnamon 1 tsp. nutmeg 1 tsp. allspice 1 tsp. cloves 1 tsp. salt 1/2 c. shortening 2 eggs 2 c. applesauce 1 c. chocolate chips 1/2 c. walnuts, chopped 1 c. raisins, optional In a bowl combine flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, cloves, and salt. In a large mixing bowl cream shortening and eggs. Add applesauce. Mix in dry ingredients then fold in chocolate chips, nuts, and raisins. Sprinkle chocolate chips and brown sugar on top. Bake at 350° for 30-40 minutes. Topping 1/2 c. chocolate chips 2 T. brown sugar
