Hi Debbie,
Well, these dishes are variously called "candied sweet potatoes", "sweet potato casserole",
or "candied yams". I am familiar with them topped with butter and brown sugar (and sometimes
a little orange juice), or chopped pecans, or marshmallows. Any of these can be very sweet,
particularly the butter & brown sugar topped dish.
From your description, I'm not sure what your grandmother's candied sweet potatoes could have
been like. There's just not enough information for me to determine what to search for. All of
the candied sweet potatoes recipes that I can find have one of those three toppings.
The recipes I have are on these pages:
12-10-2001
12-29-2001
Maybe it was "sweet potato pone" that she made.
See the recipes here: 11-27-2002
I'll post this for reader input.
